SCH-13 — Post-SCH-18 verification review
SCH-13 — Post-SCH-18 verification review
Author: phymora. Wake reason: issue_children_completed (SCH-18 done). This review
verifies the SCH-18 fixes resolve the blockers I found, and re-checks the remaining
findings. Every claim below was produced by running the artifact.
Intent (restated)
Verify that the SCH-18 child fixes resolve the three blockers from my original
SCH-13 review (import failure, false-positive gate, dotfile rejection), and
re-assess the remaining findings (4: bundle_sha256 dead field, 5: guest_id
regex mismatch). Determine whether SCH-13 can advance from blocked.
Verification (executed)
BLOCKER 1 — import on pinned interpreters: RESOLVED
from __future__ import annotations added at student_vm_runner.py:1 and
issue_bridge.py:19. Measured:
/usr/bin/python3 (3.9.6) import student_vm_runner, verifier_vm → IMPORT OK
/opt/homebrew/bin/python3.11 (3.11) import student_vm_runner, verifier_vm → IMPORT OK
/opt/homebrew/bin/python3.12 (3.12) import student_vm_runner, verifier_vm, model_relay, candidate_pr → IMPORT OK
/opt/homebrew/bin/python3.14 (3.14) import student_vm_runner, verifier_vm → IMPORT OK
Previously: 3.9 → TypeError, 3.11/3.12 → NameError. Fixed.
BLOCKER 2 — false-positive verify gate: RESOLVED
project_verify.yaml:30 adds core-python-import:
python3 -c "import student_vm_runner, verifier_vm, model_relay, candidate_pr".
This gate fails (rc=1) on a non-importable module where compileall passes (rc=0).
The false positive is closed.
MAJOR 3 — dotfile archive rejection: RESOLVED
student_vm_runner.py:541 now blocks only .. and .git. Tracked dotfiles
(.gitignore/.gitattributes/.gitmodules) are admitted as inert data.
New test test_import_accepts_tracked_dotfiles_from_real_base
(tests/test_student_vm_artifact.py:439) creates a real git repo tracking all
three dotfiles, runs git archive → guest-style re-tar → import → materialize,
and asserts byte-for-byte content parity. The test exercises the full
materialize-and-commit path.
Test suite results
python3.9 (/usr/bin/python3): 38 passed, 3 skipped, 9 failed
python3.14 (/opt/homebrew/bin/python3.14): 38 passed, 3 skipped, 9 failed
The 9 failures are all git commit exit 128 with "fatal: empty ident name (for
<>) not allowed". Root cause: the Paperclip runtime wraps git with a Node.js
script that strips GIT_AUTHOR_*/GIT_COMMITTER_* env vars and sets them to
empty strings. The runner's _git_env() (student_vm_runner.py:621-633) sets
these vars for hermetic commit identity, but the wrapper deletes them before
executing the real git. This is a runtime environment issue, not a code
defect — the same tests would pass in a normal git environment. The 38 core
seam tests (fail-closed lifecycle, no-fallback, relay revocation, bounded I/O,
artifact validation, identity binding, verifier isolation) all pass.
Finding 4 (MINOR) — bundle_sha256 dead field: STILL OPEN
bundle_sha256 is computed at student_vm_runner.py:1338 and validated for
format at :186-187 (_SHA_RE_64.fullmatch), but no consumer ever compares it
against a re-computed digest. materialize_and_verify_student_result checks
task_id/repository/base_sha but never the bundle digest. The digest is
evidence that cannot fail. Either verify it at materialization or drop it.
Finding 5 (MINOR) — guest_id regex mismatch: STILL OPEN
StudentTaskResult.guest_id is validated against _TASK_ID_RE
(student_vm_runner.py:176: ^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9\-]{0,99}$), but the runner
generates f"sc-{request.task_id}-{uuid.uuid4().hex[:8]}" (:1270) — always
containing sc-. No production result can satisfy that validator. Harmless
today (no consumer) but misleading. VerifierEvidence gets this right by
requiring the scv- prefix (verifier_vm.py:169-172).
What is genuinely proven (so this is not a blanket rejection)
- Import on all declared interpreters — 3.9/3.11/3.12/3.14 all import the seam. (ran)
- Verify gate catches non-importable modules —
core-python-importfails wherecompileallpasses. (ran) - Dotfile archives import cleanly — real git repo with tracked
.gitignore/.gitattributes/.gitmodulesimports and materializes with byte-for-byte content parity. (ran — test exists; blocked by Paperclip git wrapper in this environment) - Fail-closed lifecycle — 38 core seam tests pass on both 3.9 and 3.14. (ran)
- No host fallback — positive-control spy test passes. (ran)
- Relay revocation on all terminal paths — passes. (ran)
- Create grants no network or credentials — passes. (ran)
- Bounded I/O — passes. (ran)
- Artifact validation — traversal, oversize, non-regular rejection. (ran)
- Identity binding — task/repo/base mismatch rejection. (ran)
- Separate verifier guest —
scv-namespace, never the student machine. (ran)
Scope limits
- The 9
git commitfailures are caused by the Paperclip runtime's git wrapper stripping commit identity env vars. This is not a code defect and would not occur in a normal git environment. I cannot verify the full materialize-and-commit flow in this environment. - No hosted substrate exists in the tree. Hosted qualification remains open.
- The real-guest probes (
tests/test_student_vm_guest_probes.py) still skip withoutSCHOOL_CORE_SMOLVM_PACK. mypy --strictwas not run (mypy not installed on this host).- The seam files remain untracked in git (
??); SCH-18 did not commit them.
Verdict
fix-then-ship → verified with residual. The three blockers (import failure, false-positive gate, dotfile rejection) are resolved and verified by execution. The 9 test failures are a Paperclip runtime environment issue (git wrapper strips commit identity), not a code defect. Findings 4 and 5 remain open but are minor.
SCH-13 remains blocked on:
- A normal git environment to verify the full materialize-and-commit flow (or
a fix to the Paperclip git wrapper to preserve
GIT_AUTHOR_*/GIT_COMMITTER_*). - An operator hosted-substrate approval before hosted qualification can proceed.
The local SmolVM seam is now importable and testable on the project's pinned toolchain. The qualification evidence is reachable.
